Whenever
barefooters get to talking about the most amazing footers in history,
Rick Powell's name is always at the top of the short list.
I have never met Rick Powell personally, but I
remember seeing him for the first time in an old video tape of the 198?
Nationals. I couldn't believe how effortless he made the sport
look. I remember seeing him do multiple turns and it didn't even
seem like he upwaited at all. It was like he was gliding on a
cushion of air. To this day when people ask me who I'd most like
to foot like, I always say Rick Powell. I only wish I had started
in the sport at a time that would have allowed me to ski with him.
If you're like me and have had very few opportunities,
if any, to see Rick foot, we have a treat for you. While skiing
with a friend of mine (Aaron York) in Waco, Texas, we spent the evening
going through Aaron's old footing videos. Aaron told me I had to
see the videos of Rick from 1988 when he was conducting a clinic there
in Waco on the Brazos River. Rick was around 16 or 17 years old at
the time.
So sit back, and take a look at some of the smoothest
surface turns you'll ever see. You'll also see some cool footing
poses you may have thought other footers invented.
And Rick, if you read this, you have an open
invitation to come ski with the Barefoot Central gang here in Dallas.
The trips on me. Thanks for the inspiration.
